A little belated to say this here but I noticed that I had not updated any info since I acquired a 550 some time ago.

As of the 1.4.19/20 update pair and 1.4.20 iso and flash images and now 1.4.21, the kernel is compiled with both 3000 series Cobalt support and of the 5000 series of which there are only two models, 550 support simultaneously. I had mentioned that the lcd program that we started using in May, outputted text I added in rc.sysinit outputted fine on the Raq550 lcd but the bandwidth meter was all honked up. Turns out that the lcd version I was using had been updated last year not by Bob Fisch, who is the actual author of it but someone else. Going back to Bob's last version he released, solved the problem entirely. It also runs with almost no load on the 3000 series as well.

What can I say about the 550? Well, most came with a 1ghz Pentium III processor but mine is the less common 1.266mhz version. It has three 10,000 rpm fans and is almost tolerable with the cover on. It also has a 64bit PCI-X slot, Two National Semiconductor DP83815 nics like the Qube3 and RaqXTR do. It uses the Serverworks chipset rather than the Ali of the Gen III. I could see where this would be excellent in larger installations using a 64 bit quad Giganic. The power supply is substantially beefier than the 60 watt power supply of the 300 series but specwise it still is not all that much of a power hog when not loaded, the latter I have not managed to do here unless I am running mkflash scripts on it.

One of the things about a Raq550 that is a mixed blessing is that it is more of an ATX type power arrangement. The lit C logo button is the power button. Easy to turn on and shut down with the OS BUT, in the event of a power outage, it will not power itself back up. A new flashrom is in it's final devel stages and for the 5000 series, one of the to do list is to enable the ability to power itself on following an outage.
